old Nathan “Nearest” Green was the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. He was born into slavery in Lynchburg, Tennessee and was owned by the Jack Daniel family. Nearest taught Jack Daniel the art of distilling whiskey, and his influence can still be tasted in every drop of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.
